Information technology careers are available in every sector of the economy. The information technology industry is a dynamic and entrepreneurial field that continues to have a revolutionary impact on the economy and on the world.

About this Pathway

Courses in the Information Technology Pathway can lead to many post-secondary opportunities including work, technical training and 2-year or 4-year degree programs. This sheet lists only a few examples of those opportunities. Log into Xello or speak with a counselor to learn more. Earning two or more credits in this pathway fulfills the CTE Graduation Pathway requirement.

Students in this pathway can earn core academic in Math & Science. Students can earn a CTE & Science graduation requirement in Intro to Computer Science and STEM Robotics classes. They can also earn a CTE & Math graduation requirement in STEM Robotics and Computer Programming classes. 

Students have the ability to earn a variety of certifications, such as:

  • Information Technology Specialist Python in Computer Programming classes
  • Information Technology Specialist Cybersecurity & Ethical Hacking Associate in Cybersecurity classes
  • Internet and Computing Core Certification & Comp TIA in Computer Support Specialist classes
  • Unity Certified Artist, Unity Certified Programmer, Unity Certified VR Developer & Adobe Animate in Video Game Design classes

Students in this pathway can earn 8 college credits from Big Bend Community College in Intro to Computer Science and 5 college credits in Computer Programming.

Courses in this Pathway

  • Students will learn computer programming from Microsoft employees. Computer Science is a high demand career field that offers high wages. Students learn program design and basic programming in Java. This course is equivalent to a college-level semester introduction to programming and prepares students for the Advanced Placement Computer Science A exam.

  • A course that prepares students to analyze problems and research solutions; identify, test and implement solutions; manage working relationships with customers; install, configure and test new operating and application software; operate computer systems and monitor and analyze system performance. Includes instruction in troubleshooting, customer service, hardware and software installation, system configuration and upgrades, system monitoring and system maintenance. Students who complete the course with a B or better will be given the opportunity to take the industry standard A+ Certification Exam through CompTIA.

  • As our world becomes increasingly dependent on technology, Cybersecurity is a topic of growing importance. It is crucial that companies and individuals alike take precautions to protect themselves from the growing threat of cyber-attacks and hackers. This course prepares students with crucial skills to be responsible citizens in a digital future. Cybersecurity is designed to expose high school students to the ever-growing and farreaching field of cybersecurity. This will be accomplished through problem-based learning, where students roleplay as cybersecurity experts. Students are to use what they learn throughout this course to better society and to improve cyberspace for all. Students will build their understanding of ethical responsibility, and digital citizenship in an ever-changing digital world and will revisit those topics throughout each unit of study.

  • Intro to Computer Science focuses on computer theory, computing problems and solutions, and the design of computer systems and user interfaces from a scientific perspective. Includes instruction in the principles of computational science, computer development and programming, and applications to a variety of end-use situations. Students will apply what they learned using robots and drones.

  • STEM Robotics 101: EV3 curriculum is divided into Units, several of which contain Lessons built around the Introduction to Programming LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 curriculum (a.k.a. EV3 Trainer) from Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Academy. This curriculum is supplemented with lessons on robotics technologies, explicit math and science concepts, and the Engineering Process. This class will cover Units 1-7, culminating with Sumo-Bots. Units cover: Gears, circuits/switches, programing, firm/hard/software, graphics, switches and loops, and other robotics topics.

  • This STEM Robotics 102: EV3 curriculum is divided into Units, several of which contain Lessons built around the Introduction to Programming LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 curriculum (a.k.a. EV3 Trainer) from Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Academy. This curriculum is supplemented with lessons on robotics technologies, explicit math and science concepts, and the Engineering Process. This is the next course covering Units 8-11, culminating with Advanced Competitive Robots Techniques. Units cover: (Extensions of Robo 101) Gears, circuits/switches, programing, firm/hard/software, graphics, switches and loops, and other robotics topics, data wires, synchronization, data logging, Bluetooth, debugging, reliability, and menu systems.

  • Are you a gamer? Do you enjoy playing video games or coding? Does the idea of creating and designing your own virtual world excite you? If so, this is the course for you! Using Blender, Adobe Animate, and Unity you will tap into your creative and technical skills as you learn about the many aspects involved with designing and creating video games. You will learn about video game software and hardware, various gaming platforms, necessary technical skills, and even the history of gaming. And to top it all off, you’ll even have the opportunity to create your very own video game! Turn your hobby into a potential career and go from simply being a player in a virtual world to creating one!

  • Earn a CTE credit by working! Worksite Learning provides students the opportunity to learn in the workplace, while applying skills and knowledge obtained in a qualifying CTE class. Worksite Learning occurs at a qualified worksite outside the classroom in fulfillment of a student’s career and educational plan. There is no class to attend. Students are responsible for securing their own employment at a qualified worksite. By application only.
