If you want to run your own business or be the person that makes a business successful, this pathway is for you. Through these classes, you will become equipped with skills that open up a wide variety of opportunities after high school.

About this Pathway

Courses in the Business & Marketing Pathway can lead to many post-secondary opportunities including work, technical training and 2-year or 4-year degree programs. This sheet lists only a few examples of those opportunities. Log into Xello or speak with a counselor to learn more. Earning two or more credits in this pathway fulfills the CTE Graduation Pathway requirement.

Students in this pathway can earn core academic in English, Math & Science. Students can earn a CTE & English graduation requirement in Business Communications, a CTE & Math graduation requirement in Accounting and as well as a CTE & Science graduation requirement in Intro to Computer Science. 

Students have the ability to earn Microsoft Office Specialist Certifications in DigiTools/MicroApps classes and Imagine Academy classes. Information Technology Specialist Cybersecurity & Ethical Hacking Associate can be earned in Cybersecurity classes

Courses in this Pathway

  • Are you thinking about getting a Business degree or would you like to own your own business one day? Then take Accounting! Using commonly accepted accounting principles the students in this class will learn to keep financial records for a single owner business. The students will learn to use the language of business preparing journals, ledgers and financial statements. This is the perfect class to acquire the skills needed for a beginning bookkeeper and will provide a good foundation for college level classes.

  • This one-year course is designed for the study and practice of the basic elements of broadcast and photo journalism and video production. The course will emphasize news-gathering, writing, video recording, editing, and the study of mass media, photography and broadcast technology.

  • This class is for students that are seriously considering a career in Business & Marketing. Students will learn about businessrelated writing and communications. Topics include: business reports and proposals, business presentations, interviews, business etiquette, persuasive messages, and digital media.

  • This is an introductory course in keyboarding, word processing and microcomputer applications. Class is taught primarily using Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Students are eligible to receive up to 22 college credits from Big Bend Community College. Students will have the opportunity to become certified through the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Program in Word, Excel or PowerPoint.

  • As our world becomes increasingly dependent on technology, Cybersecurity is a topic of growing importance. It is crucial that companies and individuals alike take precautions to protect themselves from the growing threat of cyber-attacks and hackers. This course prepares students with crucial skills to be responsible citizens in a digital future. Cybersecurity is designed to expose high school students to the ever-growing and farreaching field of cybersecurity. This will be accomplished through problem-based learning, where students roleplay as cybersecurity experts. Students are to use what they learn throughout this course to better society and to improve cyberspace for all. Students will build their understanding of ethical responsibility, and digital citizenship in an ever-changing digital world and will revisit those topics throughout each unit of study.

  • This is an entry-level course designed to teach students photography as an art form. Students will learn: the photographic process, techniques for use of cameras, composing and taking photographs, elements of good photographic design, or digital-produced special effects, and presentation of work. They will be introduced to the digital image workflow from image acquisition and management to printing. Technical skills will be taught in conjunction with the creative process. Students will be instructed using industry-standard processes and software. Students will also have the opportunity to become certified professionals in Adobe Photoshop.

  • Graphic Design is a year-long, project-based curriculum that develops career and communication skills in print and graphic design. A focus on the elements of design is at the foundation of the course. It will integrate photography, graphic design, desktop publishing, web and video production and advertising.

  • Students in Microsoft Imagine Academy may explore one of 2 tracks: Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) or Adobe Certified Associate (ACA). MOS students will explore applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Advanced Word, Advanced Excel, and Access. ACA students will explore applications including Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After Effects, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash & more. Students will have the opportunity to become certified through Microsoft and Adobe to be more productive in school and business & marketing careers.

  • Do you want to go into business? Do you want to be your own boss? In this course, students will be introduced to the world of business, marketing and entrepreneurship. This class will help students develop key business skills and work ethic. Students will learn about business finances, public relations, marketing, budgeting, accounting principles and inventory management. Students are strongly recommended to join Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and compete at the regional, state and national level.

  • Intro to Computer Science focuses on computer theory, computing problems and solutions, and the design of computer systems and user interfaces from a scientific perspective. Includes instruction in the principles of computational science, computer development and programming, and applications to a variety of end-use situations. Students will apply what they learned using robots and drones.

  • Understanding and managing personal finances are key to one’s future financial success. The course presents essential knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about real-world financial issues. Students will learn how choices influence occupational options and future earning potential. Students will also learn to apply decision-making skills to evaluate career choices and set personal goals. The course content is designed to help the learner make wise spending, saving, and credit decisions and to make effective use of income to achieve personal financial success.

  • Are you a gamer? Do you enjoy playing video games or coding? Does the idea of creating and designing your own virtual world excite you? If so, this is the course for you! Using Blender, Adobe Animate, and Unity you will tap into your creative and technical skills as you learn about the many aspects involved with designing and creating video games. You will learn about video game software and hardware, various gaming platforms, necessary technical skills, and even the history of gaming. And to top it all off, you’ll even have the opportunity to create your very own video game! Turn your hobby into a potential career and go from simply being a player in a virtual world to creating one!

  • Earn a CTE credit by working! Worksite Learning provides students the opportunity to learn in the workplace, while applying skills and knowledge obtained in a qualifying CTE class. Worksite Learning occurs at a qualified worksite outside the classroom in fulfillment of a student’s career and educational plan. There is no class to attend. Students are responsible for securing their own employment at a qualified worksite. By application only.
