Healthcare is the largest and fastest-growing industry in the United States. In the Health Science pathway you can prepare for a career that promotes health, wellness and diagnosis, and treats injuries and diseases.

About this Pathway

Courses in the Health Science Pathway can lead to many post-secondary opportunities including work, military careers, technical training and 2-year, 4-year or doctoral degree programs. This sheet lists only a few examples of those opportunities. Log into Xello or speak with a counselor to learn more. Earning two or more credits in this pathway fulfills the CTE Graduation Pathway requirement.

Students in this pathway can earn core academic in Science. Students can earn a CTE & Science graduation requirement in Intro to Health Science Careers and Human Biology/Medical Terminology.

Students have the ability to earn their First Aid/CPR Certification in Intro to Health Science Careers, Sports Medicine I & II & Modern Health classes.

Students in this pathway can earn up to 15 college credits from Big Bend Community College from Human Biology/Medical Terminology.

Courses in this Pathway

  •  A very informative student-oriented class geared to current issues for all teenagers. Self- confidence, nutrition, fitness, drug, mental health, teen parents and pregnancy, STDS/AIDS, contraception, decision making and refusal skills are a few of the major topics covered and discussed in this class.

  • Human Biology: This course offers a broad overview of the human body for the non-science major. Topics of study include: unifying biological principles such as basic cell chemistry, cell biology, and metabolism, as well as the biology of selected human systems. Issues related to human biology will also be examined.

     

    Medical Terminology: This course offers a broad overview of the fundamentals of medical terminology. Topics covered include: prefixes, suffixes, combining forms, word roots, abbreviations and basic human anatomy and physiology as they pertain to all major body structures and functions.

  • Introduction to Health Science is the foundational course for all Health Science. This course will enable students to receive initial exposure to the many Health Science careers as well as employability, communication, and technology skills necessary in the healthcare industry. The concepts of human growth and development, interaction with patients and family members, health, wellness, and preventative care are evaluated, as well as the legal, ethical responsibilities of today’s healthcare provider. Fundamental healthcare skills development is initiated including microbiology, basic life support and first aid. This course will provide students with a competitive edge to be the better candidate for either entry into the healthcare global marketplace and/or the post-secondary institution of their choice to continue their education and training.

  • Sports Medicine is designed for students interested in fields such as athletic training, physical therapy, medicine, fitness, physiology of exercise, kinesiology, nutrition and other sports medicine related fields. Sports Medicine includes class work and hands-on application in: anatomy & physiology, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, taping & wrapping, first aid/CPR.

  • Sports Medicine II is designed for students who completed Sports Medicine I and are interested in fields such as athletic training, physical therapy, medicine, fitness, physiology of exercise, kinesiology, nutrition and other sports medicine related fields. Sports Medicine includes class work and hands-on application in: anatomy & physiology, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, taping & wrapping, first aid/CPR. This class will dive deeper into the topics than what was covered in the previous course. This course will involve job shadowing opportunities in settings such as Physical Therapy, Chiropractic, and General Health care.

  • Earn a CTE credit by working! Worksite Learning provides students the opportunity to learn in the workplace, while applying skills and knowledge obtained in a qualifying CTE class. Worksite Learning occurs at a qualified worksite outside the classroom in fulfillment of a student’s career and educational plan. There is no class to attend. Students are responsible for securing their own employment at a qualified worksite. By application only.
